I’m an information junkie and if you visit this site regularly, you know I am always posting info about car auction, public auto parts, and salvage vehicles.
Well, I found a great article I think you should read. Don’t give me that look (translation: ‘What?!? More reading to do?)! How else can you gauge for yourself how valuable the article is unless you read it?
Check it out below and let me know what you think. After you finish reading, don’t forget to check out the info here on car auction, public auto parts, and salvage vehicles.
What is a Salvage Vehicle?Salvage vehicles are those "totaled" by an insurance company because the cost of repairs would exceed the car’s value. This does not necessarily mean that the car cannot be repaired and made roadworthy. Salvage vehicles are often sold at a UK public car auction at very attractive prices and fall into the following categories.
Category A
Category A means that there’s no cost effective way to repair to repair the vehicle. The cost of repairs would far exceed the car’s market value. Even the parts in a category A vehicle are questionable, so avoid these cars in a public vehicle auction.
Category B
Consider buying a category B at a public auto auction car for parts only. This type of salvage car contains parts in good condition. Removal and resale of these and other parts is likely to exceed the market price, so you would make a profit.
Category C
A category C salvage vehicle can be repaired and made roadworthy. This type of car can be a good buy at a public vehicle auction if you have extensive automotive knowledge and can repair the vehicle yourself.
Category D
This type of vehicle is considered fully repairable at a cost that is estimated to be less than the market value. Expect to make a profit if you intend to resell the vehicle at an auto auction or elsewhere.
Category X
Category X cars often have little or no damage and generally are recovered stolen vehicles. Because they require little work, they’re easy to resell at a profit in live auto auctions or in an online public car auction.
So here’s the bottom line on salvage vehicles you might find at a public car auction in the UK: Stick to category X and D if your budget allows and if you’re not mechanically inclined. Consider category C if you’re car-savvy and can effect repairs yourself to save money. Category A and B vehicles are good for parts only.
